I just returned from a health care forum with Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. Chairman Baucus has been traveling across Montana the past couple of days trying to get information on our health care system.
The forum was very constructive. The single greatest asset I love about Montana is the honesty and integrity of the people. Those qualities were evident as the discussion progressed from problems within the health care system to ideas on fixing them.
Chairman Baucus plainly stated we have a broken health care system that is facing crisis. He likened the crisis to some of the larger ones in American history. He said the next President (no matter who is elected) will present a health care reform package. Chairman Baucus also stated there is little, if any support for a single payor system like is found in Canada.
As Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Baucus leads the oversight of health care and Medicare. He is committed to health care reform and delivering a reform package that will work for the American people. He has stated we have a health care system that is patched together with bailing wire and is far too complex.
I will be meeting with Senator Baucus and his health care advisors the week of March 3-7 in Washington DC. I have regular contact with Chairman Baucus’ health care staff and I have presented an honest picture of some of the problems I see in our health care system. I have also suggested a few changes I would like to see. Let me hear from you readers and I will take your ideas and concerns to the Senator next week.
Make know mistake, no matter what health care package the next President sends to Congress, Chairman Baucus will have a large hand in changing a crafting the package within the Senate Finance Committee.
